馬祖天后宮香火十分鼎盛，位於南竿島西方的馬祖港邊，廟內供奉媽祖，左右陪祀有千里眼與順風耳。相傳昔日孝女林默娘投海救父，背負父親的屍體漂流至南竿島，當地的居民厚葬於此，並建立廟祀奉，廟中央的石方及媽祖棺木遺跡，為感念此事蹟，此島遂稱為「馬祖島」。清康熙時謚封媽祖為天后，又稱「天后宮」，為當地的信仰中心。每年的農曆3月23日媽祖誕辰紀念日，迎靈繞境，是當地民間重要祭典日。
