白堤是西湖上歷史最悠久的古堤，中國寺人白居易（772-846年）任杭州太守時曾在西湖築堤，後人為紀念他通稱這條古堤為白（公）堤。斷橋，位於白堤東端，中國民間傳說《白蛇傳》中白娘子與徐仙纏綿悲涼的愛情故事就是從斷橋相遇開始的。
