南澳是澳洲第三大省，面積98萬8千平方公里，佔澳洲大陸面積的八分之一．地勢大致平坦，但在接近阿德萊得處，地勢向上高升，形成獨特的福林德斯嶺．在水量充足的地方，土地都作為畜牧場或種植小麥，是全澳洲最大的釀酒產地，阿德萊得附近的巴羅薩谷及克拉爾谷就是澳洲其中兩個著名的葡萄園區．其北部是一片荒原，人煙稀少，與草原地帶及城市精華區的熱鬧情景大異其趣．
